Saturday, March 12
Bournemouth 3-2 Swansea City Referee: Roger East
Barrow goes tumbling inside area after seemingly being tripped by Daniels. Unreliable Roger East does not give a free kick let alone a penalty. The replays show the foul probably is committed outside the box – and East gets away with a potential match-changing howler! Goals on Sunday don’t show it. Or at least they had not before I switched off (mentally) and went back to sleep. So some personal research proves it is outside (see below).
Norwich City 0-0 Manchester City Referee: Jonathan Moss
Was Aguero brought down inside the box? It was mighty close. MOTD, as per usual, fail to review post-match. Over to Chris Kamara on Goals on Sunday but I miss Sky Sports’ permitted one minute of highlights, this game belonging to rivals BT Sport. Petty. So once more we get down to business and see that Moss is right!!!!! Not just once but twice as he also correctly denies late City handball shout for handball. Never deliberate.
Stoke City 1-3 Southampton (1-2) Referee: Lee Mason
Lee Mason misses a blatant Butland trip on Saints man Tadic for a penalty. I was there, had a perfect view. Pretty much the same view as Mason’s assistant, who sees nothing! As for Mane’s red card, the Saints’ sixth of the campaign (no Europa League via fair play route for them), it seems very harsh. Unless, that is, Mane deliberately heads Pieters’ nut while challenging for a bouncing ball.
Sunday, March 13
Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham Referee: Anthony Taylor
Monday, March 14
Leicester City 1-1 Newcastle (1-0) Referee: Craig Pawson.
Pawson right to deny Leicester and Vardy a 13th-minute penalty after run is checked in box by Janmaat. Then Vardy is decreed onside, by Dermot Gallagher, when setting up Leicester’s first-half ‘winner’ as Newcastle defender Taylor attempted to play the ball, thus making it a new phase. Simple when you know the rules, eh, Jamie Carragher?! But should Morgan have conceded a penalty, with his elbow blocking goal bound 82nd-minute drive. On Monday Night Football, special guest pundit Ronald Koeman says: “This is a clear penalty as he moves arm towards the ball.” Jamie C agrees, reluctantly and grumpily, still put out at having his half-time offside analysis rendered utterly redundant by Sky’s quick phonecall to Gallagher.
