West Ham are unluckiest at top after Bridge trip.
The Hypothetical Premier League, using video referees for the crunch calls.
Matches with HPL scoreline change in red (real-life result in brackets).
Saturday, March 20
Chelsea 1-2 West Ham (2-2) Referee: Robert Madley
Tough call at full throttle but replays show Loftus-Cheek is fouled outside the area by Antonio (pictured above). Everybody says no penalty, so here at HPL we do too. The Hammers’ title hopes are very much alive in our parallel universe. With a game in hand, they are FOUR points behind leaders Leicester. Little wonder manager Slaven Bilic, co-owner David Sullivan and noisy son Jack are complaining. As we know, this is not the first time West Ham have been crippled by a whistleblower.
Crystal Palace 0-2 Leicester City (0-1) Referee: Mike Jones
That’s surely a Leicester penalty when Huth has his shirt removed by Dann, albeit it slips off very swiftly. Ref watch on SSN HQ agrees.
West Brom 0-1 Norwich Referee: Anthony Taylor
Everton 0-3 Arsenal (0-2) Referee Mark Clattenburg
Sanchez is fouled – probably twice – in the box and BT Sport’s TV ref Howard Webb is quick to point to the spot. Gallagher gives the same verdict.
Swansea 1-0 Aston Villa Referee: Mike Dean
Is there a new directive stating two bookings does not equal red? Dean must think so after not sending off Cissokho for two of the clearest cautionary offences.
Watford 1-2 Stoke City Referee: Craig Pawson
You have to go with lino’s call that Arnautovic’s ponytail strays offside. Haircut for the Stoke man.
Sunday, March 21
Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United (0-1) Referee: Michael Oliver
It’s a City penalty when Mangala is bundled over in box. Dermot Gallagher backs this up in Ref Watch. Yes, they happen all the time but they would soon fade if caught by CKTV – that’s Corner Kick TV. However, two wrongs soon make a right when Demichelis brings down Rashford and Michael ‘I’m in meltdown’ Oliver fails to award anything. “he will be beating himself up over that,” admits DG. The guy needs a break, further highlighted by him not sending off Smalling for two bookings.
Newcastle 1-1 Sunderland Referee: Martin Atkinson
Southampton 4-2 Liverpool (3-2) Referee: Roger East
Lovren’s shove in Long’s is a clear penalty for the Saints. It’s 0-0 at the time. Luckily for Mr East, it does not affect the result, courtesy of Liverpool’s absurd late collapse.
Tottenham 3-0 Bournemouth Referee: Neil Swarbrick
