Tuesday, March 1
Aston Villa 1-3 Everton (1-3) Referee: Roger East
Bournemouth 2-0 Southampton (2-0) Referee: Mike Dean
All the drama surrounds fourth official Kevin Friend after he collapses just before the break.
Leicester City 2-2 West Brom (2-2) Referee: Mark Clattenburg Vardy goes crashing as Olsson challenges (pic below) but Clattenburg waves away penalty appeals – and for once he appears spot on. BBC Five Live summariser Joey Barton, who for the record is very good on radio, says: “I’m not saying he dives but Vardy is an expert at going down with minimal contact. A ref of Clattenburg’s experience is never going to give that.” Andy Hinchcliffe, on Sky Sports, reiterates this view.
Norwich 1-1 Chelsea (1-2) Referee: Lee Mason
Costa is way offside for Chelsea’s second (pic below) – another sign of the lack of referee justice for clubs fighting relegation. Wake up lino!
Sunderland 2-2 Crystal Palace (2-2) Referee: Anthony Taylor
Was it a corner or not before Palace go 2-1 up? It doesn’t affect our HPL calculations but these are the parts that the anti-techno brigade will latch upon as causing too much disruption to the flow of the game – and I tend to agree. Hockey get it right, though.
Wednesday, March 2
Arsenal 1-2 Swansea City (1-1) Referee: Robert Madley
The alleged foul on Ozil before Swansea’s equaliser is out of HPL bounds. But Williams being offside for visitors’ winner is not. Danny Murphy says: “Yes,. he is probably a yard offside but…” But nothing. Not a goal. What HPL does accept is that unlike the Costa strike at Carrow Road, this is a tough one for the man with the flag because of the crowded penalty area. But it is another classic example as to why IFAB must give the thumbs up this weekend in Cardiff for testing to begin with the offside slide-ruler, which can be used only when the ball hits the back of the net. Call it a GoalCam. It will spring into action when a goal is scored. Surely, that is not too much to ask. It’s so simple. Anyway, this showdown ends 1-1. Arsenal stay top by a point.
West Ham 1-0 Tottenham (1-0) Referee: Andre Marriner
Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City (3-0) Referee: Martin Atkinson
Only saw MOTD highlights and they scarcely go overboard on Milner’s alleged handball during the match and ignore it completely post match. The fact Martin Atkinson is in charge of the game reduces the chances of it being given as a penalty to pretty much zip. He is one to watch come the Euros.
Manchester United 1-0 Watford (1-0) Referee: Mike Jones
Stoke City 1-0 Newcastle Utd (1-0) Referee: Neil Swarbrick
