Hot and bothered Jose’s summer blues – Wk 1

courtoisgomis_wk1

New ref Hooper rocks new boys Norwich.

Hypothetical Premier League result in brackets, official real-life score first.

Games with an HPL scoreline change in red.

Saturday, August 8

Bournemouth 0-1 Aston Villa (0-1) Referee: Mark Clattenburg

Chelsea 2-2 Swansea (2-2). Referee Michael Oliver
First major call of the season – live on the box, that is – and Oliver does not shy away, showing Chelsea keeper Courtois red for foul on Gomis and awarding a penalty, from which Swansea equalise for a second time. Everyone agrees it was either on the edge of the area or, just inside. However, Thierry Henry and Jamie Redknapp both disagree with the sending off. But 24 hours later, their Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher attempts to prove the Swansea striker was in with a decent chance of scoring. All irrelevant for hopping mad Jose Mourinho, who blames everything on his two too-hasty physios. Let the madness begin. Makes no odds to the shock scoreline.

Everton 2-2 Watford (2-2) Referee: Mike Jones

Leicester City 4-2 Sunderland (4-2). Referee Lee Mason.
Mason gets the penalty right for Leicester, while his linesman makes a good call with regards Albrighton not being offside for the fourth goal after the fumbling, stumbling Kaboul miscontrols a cross.

Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham (1-0) Referee Jonathan Moss

Norwich 1-3 Crystal Palace (2-3) Referee: Simon Hooper
Premier League debutant referee Simon Hooper allows Murray to escape a red card lunge in the opening minutes and thereafter finds his afternoon go from bad to worse with a series of nightmare calls. He’s a hard-looking whistleblower is Mr Hooper, like a secondary school PE instructor might look if they existed still, and he may need an equally hard exterior when it comes to criticism. At 2-0 to Palace the game looked over but then Norwich pull one back before Jerome’s overhead kick levels proceedings – or rather it would have done but for Hooper deciding it was dangerous play. No way say both HP and LP. ‘Poor decision,’ says Shearer. ‘One hundred per cent,’ agrees Danny Murphy. A late Norwich penalty appeal looks too soft to be given – a point borne out by MOTD ignoring it.

Sunday, August 9:

Arsenal 0-2 West Ham (0-2) Referee: Martin Atkinson
Interesting here whether for Goalcam you re-track all the way back to review a free-kick given should it lead to a goal – a la West Ham’s opener. HPL believe this is going too far. However, even if you do take that step here, it was a dangerous Arsenal foot up rightly penalised.

Newcastle 2-2 Southampton (2-2) Referee: Craig Pawson

Stoke 0-1 Liverpool (0-1) Referee: Anthony Taylor

Monday, August 10

West Brom 0-3 Manchester City (0-3) Referee: Mike Dean
