Week 11

Saturday, October 31

Chelsea 1-3 Liverpool (1-3) Referee: Mark Clattenburg
Jose Mourinho has done himself no favours, of course, when it comes to referees and his constant attacks on officialdom. But that should not stop Clattenburg showing Lucas a second yellow for a blatant foul on Ramires. The score is 1-1 at the time and the subsequent capitulation by Chelsea, and their Halloween humiliation would not have unravelled but for this shocking dereliction of duty. The HPL cannot get involved in such things, making these words utterly irrelevant!

Crystal Palace 0-0 Manchester United (0-0) Referee: Mike Jones
Correct: No penalty when Herrera goes down.

Manchester City 2-1 Norwich (2-1) Referee: Robert Madley

Newcastle 0-0 Stoke City (0-0) Referee: Roger East
Luckily for Mr East, Bojan is outside the area when he fails to notice Williamson take out the silky Spanish star. These are decisions we have to live with even in the modern ear of TV replays – though red card offences could be reviewed and the relayed to the referee, of course. This would actually could be quite exciting, for wont of a better word.

Swansea 0-3 Arsenal (1-2) Referee: Kevin Friend
A definite Swansea penalty missed when Mertesacker uses elbow/forearm to block Sigurdsson free kick. Whether they should have one earlier when Gomis goes tumbling after an apparent tap-tackle by Cech is considerably more debatable and not even an issue post-match. Upon reflection Arsenal’s second goal should not have stood either as Koscielny and Giroud combined back into Swansea keeper Fabianski before the former of Arsenal’s Frenchmen taps into an empty net. Match of the Day’s Jermain Jenas says in total contradiction: “They are given nine times out of ten as a foul but it’s not enough for me.” What? HPL was at this game and the verdict is 1-2!

Watford 2-0 West Ham (2-0) Referee: Keith Stroud
Good call by Mr Stroud in not giving handball when Andy Carroll heads down onto his own arm. The big England striker, who seems to be very pleased with himself for making a few appearances without suffering another injury, has a shocking day all round.

West Brom 2-3 Leicester City (3-3) Referee: Anthony Taylor
Tony Pulis is hopping mad over two penalties not given. MOTD verdict is that they are both penalties but that the one West Brom did get, when McLean goes down, is a wrong decision. Is Mahrez not offside for Leicester’s second? If he is, then the Baggies actually win 3-2…(but we’re sticking with 3-3 for now, as nobody on MOTD pays much attention to it post-match and we missed the other reviews elsewhere…if they actually took place. Can’t be everywhere the whole time. Apologies
).

Southampton 2-0 Bournemouth (2-0) Referee: Craig Pawson

Monday, November 2
