Hammers and Baggies stuffed on Boxing Day.

HPL result shown in brackets, with official real-life score first.

Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham (1-2) Referee: Mike Dean
Handball against Westwood not given but sure seemed the Villa man deliberately moves it to block the ball – a view shared by every pundit. So Hammers winning penalty it is. And HPL is also sticking with the penalty awarded to and converted by Villa when Gestade goes tumbling. Poor defending from Ogbanna is to blame; he is all over him. The fact is Gestade has won control of the situation and is shielding the ball. So what if he decides to check his run? That’s his prerogative, as in any case when the much-underrated art of shielding to keep possession is used. The defender has to be aware of the danger of crashing into his opponent. Now, whether under a review system, an alleged tug by the Villa man earlier in the chase for the ball would render the later foul irrelevant is a question for the future. Don’t bet against it. Such physical contact, with the hands on an opponent, will be seriously frowned upon when video replays become the norm. Probably not a bad thing, either. But at this time the pundits view it to be innocuous.

Bournemouth 0-0 Crystal Palace (0-0) Referee: Michael Oliver

Chelsea 2-2 Watford (2-2) Referee: Andre Marriner

Liverpool 1-0 Leicester City (1-0) Referee: Martin Atkinson

Manchester City 4-1 Sunderland (5-1) Referee: Anthony Taylor
Sterling is totally taken out at 0-0. Should have been a penalty – not a yellow. Terrible Boxing Day decision that makes absolutely no difference to the score, save goal difference, but Taylor’s inability to decipher such a blatant foul, and then decree it a nasty piece of simulation from the England man, is worrying.

Newcastle 0-1 Everton (0-1) Referee: Lee Mason

Southampton 4-0 Arsenal (2-0) Referee: Jonathan Moss
Davis is offside when heading the ball backwards before the 30-yard screamer from Martina puts the Saints 1-0 up and then Long trips Koscielny ahead of scoring the second. Don’t do corner cams so their ‘third’ goal stands – whatever the validity of the initial decision to award the set-piece. Wenger is on his technological soapbox post match but not even this would spare his turkeys from defeat.

Stoke City 2-0 Manchester United (2-0) Referee: Kevin Friend

Swansea City 1-0 West Brom (1-1) Referee: Roger East
Baggies robbed of a penalty in first half when Angel Rangel takes out Chris Brunt inside the area. As for flying McManaman’s penalty appeal at the other end late in the second half – a clear dive after losing the ball.

Tottenham 3-0 Norwich (3-0) Mike Jones
