Friday, August 14

Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester United. (1-1) Referee Mike Dean
The visitors’ new Italian defender Darmian clearly grabs and hauls ex-Sapmdoria defender Richards – in true Serie A style – denying the Villa skipper a header inside the penalty area. “I’m not going to stick pins into the ref,” is Tim Sherwood’s measured response to Mike Dean’s failure to spot the infringement and take the correct action – award a penalty. That might, in defence of the official, be down to Richards ever-so-slight theatrical fall. However, Gary Neville is adamant on Friday Night Football, as it will be known next season – the traffic is an issue here, folks – United got away with one.

Saturday, August 15

Swansea 2-0 Newcastle Referee: (2-0) Mike Jones
A first class display from Mike Jones – only taken three years but proof that with persistence progress can be made.

Southampton 0-3 Everton (0-3) Referee: Michael Oliver

Sunderland 1-3 Norwich (1-3) Referee: Kevin Friend

West Ham 1-2 Leicester (2-2) Referee: Anthony Taylor
Hammers should have had a penalty when Kapser Schmiechel clearly takes out Sakho in the area. The referee did get the late red card for Adrian right. Whether the Hammers would have been chasing the game in the final seconds, with keeper going up for a corner, had it been 2-2 is quite another matter.

Manchester City 3-0 Chelsea (2-0) Referee: Martin Atkinson
A lot of potential game changers, especially Fernandinho, who should have been sent off and then scores the third, which is therefore chalked off. He will also score in the next game but we can’t get involved there. Of course, to have instant ‘retrospective’ action for such red card tackles or violent conduct offences would mean that the team sinned against might actually benefit as opposed to the guilty party’s future opponents.

Tottenham 2-2 Stoke City (2-2) Referee: Robert Madley

Watford 0-0 West Brom (0-0) Referee: (0-0) Paul Tierney

Sunday, August 16

Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal (1-2) Referee: Lee Mason
Everything ok with the result, HPL wise, but Mason’s failure to send of Coquelin not once but twice is inexplicable. He was suspended the following weekend – the ref that is – and forced to take a fourth official role.

Monday, August 17

Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth (0-1) Referee: Mike Jones
Spoke too soon about MJ – though his assistant is the real culprit. Benteke, who scores the goal, is onside but Coutinho, who tries to play the ball, is offside by some distance. Everyone accepts it is offside, under the new rules, while it appears Elphick’s goal should have stood when he is penalized for a foul on lucky Lovren. From Jamie C to Gary N they all think Bournemouth are robbed.
